19th century French patch box in the shape of a beautiful shell on the bottom and the inset lid decorated with a spray of forget-me-nots.  Feels substantial in the hand with fine work articulating the shell. Gold vermeil inside. Interior mirror. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of "beauty patches" was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed taffeta and would be pasted on the skin as a "beauty mark" that would emphasize a lady's feature, usually the cheek. This case is 1.75" across, holds 1/4 oz. (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice.
