Nineteenth century Louis XVI silver plate patch box with embossed Rococo pattern of leaves, flowers and shells. Superbly decorated on each side. The front focuses around a heart-shaped cartouche surrounded by flower sprays and arabesques. The back is embossed with two fanciful shells and an arabesque double frame. Original antique mirror inside and closes firmly with a satisfying snap. It is 2 inches by 1.5 inches, holds 1/4 oz. (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of "beauty patches" was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed silk and was pasted on the skin as a "beauty mark" to emphasize a woman's facial feature, usually the cheek. See example of antique patches in picture below.
