Utterly charming antique French Art Nouveau late 19th century silver metal patch box with embossed copper decorations: a mandolin, trumpet and sheet music with musical notes (!), and more. The back is embossed with wonderful repoussé Art Nouveau tropical-looking leaves and vines. Original antique mercury-glass mirror inside. 1.5 inches across, holds 1/4 oz. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of "beauty patches" was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed silk and was pasted on the skin as a "beauty mark" to emphasize a woman's facial feature, usually the cheek. See example of antique patches in picture below.
