Stunning 19th century oval sterling silver patch box with central cartouche surrounded by three embossed mythical creatures: In the center a superb head of a faun (a man with goat horns and ears) flanked by two chimeras (a combination of a fire-breathing lion, goat and dragon). Both the front and back are encircled by beautiful botanical patterns. The back is embossed with charming musical instruments and an urn. Has ring which allows it to be worn as a locket. One silver hallmark on the rim of the lid and gold vermeil inside. Original antique mirror inside the lid in perfect condition, which closes firmly with a satisfying snap. It is 1.75 inches diameter and holds 1/4 oz. (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of "beauty patches" was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed silk and was pasted on the skin as a "beauty mark" to emphasize a woman's facial feature, usually the cheek.
