Superb and rare! Scottish banded agate double-sided sterling oval snuff box from late 19th Century. It is made from two beautiful pieces of multi-colored banded Scottish agate. It is usual to find one like this in sterling silver. There are two silver hallmarks on the right side of the box It exhibits gentle wear consistent with age and has a tactile polish which only comes with years of handling. Two minor scratches are shown with arrows in the last two photos. The many linear striations are not cracks but rather natural "inclusions" of mineral deposits in a striking pattern of light & dark segments that do not break the polished surfaces of the top and bottom stones. It feels good in the hand.This case is 2" x 1.75" and holds one-quarter ounce (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice.
