Superb thistle flowers and leaves beautifully embossed decorate both sides of this sterling Art Nouveau (Circa 1900) French Patch Box. Finely detailed embossed stems (complete with thorns) of thistle flowers and leaves encircle the central image on each side. Exquisitely done including the matte finish on the sterling silver. Hallmark on rim of lid, and additional hallmark on the jump-ring that allows it be worn as a locket. Has magnificent beveled magnifying mirror inside lid with gold trim, and gold wash inside. 1.75 inches across, the price includes 1/4 oz. (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of "beauty patches" was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed silk and was pasted on the skin as a "beauty mark" to emphasize a woman's facial feature, usually the cheek.
