Silver-plated patch box circa 1880's with beautifully detailed embossed solitaire iris flower and leaves surrounded by tiny flowers and leaves. The plating has worn away in a beautiful wabi-sabi fashion creating gold highlights on both sides of the case. The back is embossed with a flower in the shape of a star encircled with a magical pin-wheel configuration of leaves dotted with tiny flowers. Original mirror inside in great condition. Comes with a ring which allows it to be worn as a pendant. This beautiful case is 1.75 inches across, holds 1/4 oz. (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of "beauty patches" was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed silk and was pasted on the skin as a "beauty mark" to emphasize a woman's facial feature, usually the cheek.
