Finely embossed woodland leaves and berries decorate the front and the back of this sterling silver Art Nouveau patch box circa 1900. It has "800" silver hallmark and maker's mark on the inside rim of the lid and two hallmarks on the jump-ring. This gorgeous patch box can also be worn as a locket. Interior is gold vermeil and includes a mirror in great condition encircled by gold beading. It is 1.50 inches across, the price includes 1/8 oz. (4 ml) solid perfume of your choice. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of "beauty patches" was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed silk and was pasted on the skin as a "beauty mark" to emphasize a woman's facial feature, usually the cheek. See example of antique patches in picture below.
