Antique French brass ormolu and enamel compact with hand painted roses surrounded by cobalt and green enamel border. The back is antique brass with a finely done textured pattern. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of "beauty patches" was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed taffeta and would be posed on the skin as a "beauty mark" that would emphasize a lady's feature, usually the cheek. This case is 1 7/8" x 1 1/2" x 3/8", holds 1/4 oz. (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice.
