Sterling silver Art Nouveau patch box from 1900 exquisitely embossed, on both the front and back, with 2 finely-articulated carnation flowers with buds and leaves. The flowers are surrounded by a "fingerprint" textual pattern of fine workmanship.. There are three hallmarks on the rim of the of the box. Interior is gold vermeil, with the original beveled mirror in good condition.. Case measures 1.3 inches across, the price includes 1/4 oz. (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of "beauty patches" was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed silk and was pasted on the skin as a "beauty mark" to emphasize a woman's facial feature, usually the cheek.
