Very special French antique sterling silver patch box circa 1880's with dragon in the center. The dragon is made of gold, wearing a gold crown crown and breathing gold flames. Encircling the dragon is a halo of stars and then a garland of leaves. Interior is gold-washed and houses the original "fish-eye" style mirror in perfect condition, and closes with a satisfying snap. Has one hallmark on rim of lid. Measures 1.8 inches across, and the price includes 1/4 oz (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of "beauty patches" was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed silk and was pasted on the skin as a "beauty mark" to emphasize a woman's facial feature, usually the cheek.
