Extraordinary and Rare 19th Century Sterling Silver Patch Box with embossed rococo pattern of leaves, flowers and face of a faun. Superbly decorated both top and bottom. Central cartouche on the top surrounded by the head of a faun, flower sprays and other fanciful decorations. The back is embossed with two shells connected with arabesque patterns. Beautiful botanical pattern encircling the box. Has ring which allows it to be worn as a locket and three hallmarks. Original beveled antique mirror inside the lid in perfect condition, which closes firmly with a satisfying snap. It is 1.75 inches diameter and holds 1/4 oz. (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of "beauty patches" was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed silk and was pasted on the skin as a "beauty mark" to emphasize a woman's facial feature, usually the cheek.
